Participants in February course sessions must arrive at Oglebay Resort between 4:30-6:30 pm for registration as the opening ceremony begins promptly at 6:30 pm with a class session to follow. International participants and some participants traveling long distances or with multiple layovers usually choose to travel and arrive on Sunday in order to arrive in time for registration on Monday. If a Sunday stay is necessary, please budget for seven nights of lodging. Please schedule travel to allow time for check-in and school registration prior to kickoff ceremonies, as well as completion of all course requirements.

Travel & Transportation

Air Travel 

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is the closest airport (approximately 1 hour away). Columbus Airport (CMH) is another full-service option (approximately 2 hours away).

Pittsburgh airport is used by most participants. Columbus is a good alternative in bad weather when flights are canceled.



Oglebay Resort is located at Route 88 North, Wheeling, West Virginia, 26003 (1-800-624-6988). From Interstate 70, merge onto US-40 Spur/Mt De Chantal Road via exit 2A toward WV-88 north/Oglebay Park. Turn right onto National Road/RD-40, turn left onto WV-88/Bethany Pike. End at Oglebay Park, Wheeling, West Virginia. 

Parking at the hotel is FREE. Tesla electric charging ports are available.


Transportation between Airport and Hotel

If your institution is sending more than one person or you are able to coordinate with others attending the courses, it is more cost-effective to rent a car for the week. Otherwise, there is a preferred shuttle service from the Pittsburgh Airport that offers a discount for transportation to Oglebay: (Note that “limousine” means van.)

Note: Reservations and payments must be made 14 days in advance to qualify for this rate. When making air travel arrangements please allow at least 1.5 hours for transportation to Oglebay. You will need to provide flight information to book a shuttle service. The discount is not offered for flights scheduled to arrive after 9:00 PM. The fare amount does not include gratuity. Please indicate if you would like to include the gratuity for your driver to be charged to your card at the time of reservation. (15% is customary.)


Once you have been accepted into a class, the Oglebay Lodging Request Form will be sent to you. Do not make reservations until you have received your acceptance email from AZA. Submit your completed Lodging Request Form to the Oglebay National Training Center via email. Note that reservations must be made with a credit card and the package amount will be charged to your card upon receipt of the reservation. Please do not call the resort to make reservations. If you choose a double room, you must request a specific roommate on the form.

Lodging options include single rooms, double rooms, and group cottages. Many students enjoy the relaxed social atmosphere of the cottages. Two, four and six-bedroom cottages are located within walking distance to Wilson Lodge and feature a full kitchen with microwave, living room with wood-burning fireplace and more. Standard double room rates apply to those staying in cottages. Please note that these accommodations are semi-private (private bedroom but share a bathroom, living room/common area, and kitchen).

All packages include: 

  • 6 nights of accommodations (Monday-Saturday)  
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and break service (Monday evening-Saturday)

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the hotel room cost (see Lodging). All are served buffet-style with vegetarian options. If you have food allergies or special dietary needs please contact the AZA Professional Development Staff before arriving in Wheeling.

Coffee, tea, sodas, and light snacks (chips, cookies, etc) are served at breaks. There is also a gift shop located in the lobby of Wilson Lodge with a variety of snacks and drinks.

Helpful Hints

If you like drinking coffee in the classroom, bring a travel mug with you to fill up during breaks. The coffee cups at the lodge don’t hold as much and are easy to spill on your papers or computers.

Speaking of papers…if you haven’t attended a class in a while, you will be taking notes. Don’t forget to bring a laptop or pad of paper and a writing utensil with you!

Dress in layers. The temperature fluctuates in the classrooms so please bring clothing layers in order to be comfortable during class.

Don’t know anyone? Don’t worry! Many people come to Wheeling not knowing anyone and leave with a whole group of new friends and colleagues!
