Utilizing the power of AZA members, visitors to member aquariums and zoos, and our partners and donors, we are creating a movement for conservation that will increase public participation in conservation actions and increase public awareness around the conservation work already being done, as well as the evolving role of AZA facilities.
When delivering conservation education programs, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums raise awareness about conservation issues and engage visitors in actions that help save wildlife, that's why the public engagement goals of SAFE revolve around educating the public and zoo and aquarium visitors. We want everyone to learn about the exciting and important conservation work AZA-accredited institutions do, support the conservation efforts of their local AZA-accredited facility, and take individual action to save wildlife and habitats. Engaging local communities is often key to saving species. AZA SAFE Conservation Action Plans include community engagement strategies that work with those living and working in or near the habitat of SAFE species to provide solutions that work for both humans and animals. Projects also work locally and internationally to change consumer behavior that has a direct impact on a SAFE species. These projects include working with partners to support programs to reduce human-wildlife conflict and make sustainable seafood choices.
AZA-accredited aquariums and zoos are centers of conservation, and are actively telling the story of the collective impact the AZA community has on saving species and engaging people. Visit our Zoo and Aquarium News page for the latest coverage.
AZA-accredited aquariums and zoos work to educate lawmakers at the local, state, and federal levels to pass laws and regulations that protect endangered species. Several pieces of legislation are currently before the U.S. Congress that you can support right now. Learn more in the AZA Legislative Education Center.
In addition to financial support, our corporate partners also help us engage and educate the public. AZA partnered with Unite For Literacy to develop a collection of engaging picture books, each one featuring one of the 10 SAFE Signature Species. You can find them all online here.
Many SAFE resources are available to AZA members in the AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction group on the AZA Network. Please note, a login is required to access the AZA Network to access these resources.
