Education Instructor - ZooED (Full Time)
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, the ZooED education instructor supports the ZooED Adventurous Learning program, which includes delivering ZooEd programs, such as Zoomobiles and guided tours for participating schools and organizations throughout the zoological tax district. This position also assists with organizing and maintaining all program materials, supervising participants and occasionally aiding with ZooED curriculum development and improvement.

Delivers various ZooEd education programs, both on and off site, including guided tours and Zoomobile programs, while promoting zoo conservation education.

Assists education supervisors with the maintenance, organization, order processing and delivery of ZooEd materials.

Assists education supervisors in the development and enhancement of ZooEd programs, including:
- Resource gathering and maintenance
- Administrative support
- Working to consistently improve knowledge of science education techniques and content
- Maintaining proficiency in animal care and handling of the education animal collection

|
Assists ZooEd supervisor with teacher training events.
|
5%
|
|
Assists in the promotion of the zoo’s programs and events.
|

|
*This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, biology or related field required.
- EXPERIENCE:
- At least 2 years’ experience with formal/informal teaching required.
- Knowledge of classroom management techniques and skills using teaching aids, including animals, biofacts, artifacts and library resources, preferred.
- Previous experience in animal handling and knowledge of appropriate and safe handling techniques preferred.
- Previous zoo, aquarium or museum experience preferred.
- Training or credentials in interpretation preferred.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and audio-visual equipment, preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to lift 40-50 pounds and have the ability to remain on feet for long periods of time.
- Position requires animal contact.
- Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
- Must pass a background and drug screening.
