Interns work with our aviculturists to learn about husbandry, training, and education as the Animal Collections Department encompasses all of those areas. This internship is very competitive, and an application does not guarantee an interview.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities will include cleaning, food preparation, animal observations, daily presentations, assisting with enrichment, public lorikeet feedings, observing or assisting in training sessions, and other duties as assigned. Interns may have the opportunity to participate in various workshops that cover basic training concepts and other relevant material to the animal behavior and care field.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 18 years of age; able to lift and carry 50 pounds; work both as a team and independently; self-starter with a positive attitude; ability to interact with the public; speak fluent English; and considering a career in the animal care field. Interns will be working around, and possibly with, a number of known allergens including, but not limited to, peanuts, tree nuts, seafood, and latex.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must have US citizenship or show current VISA*
All of our staff are required to pass both a PA Child Abuse Investigation and a Criminal Background Investigation in order to work at the National Aviary. If an applicant is not a resident in the U.S. for the last seven years, the applicant is required to pay for and pass a background investigation through our vendor that processes our out-of-country investigations. If applicant is under age 25, the residency cut-off will be based on the number of years back to age 18. Example: A twenty year old must be a US resident since turning age 18 (two years); otherwise, the out-of-country investigation requirement will apply.
*Canadian citizen may instead provide identification required by our vendor.
Additionally, we require anyone who is offered a position to pass the FBI Fingerprinting Background Investigation. The Animal Collections Department has many activities involving children. Currently, the charge for that is $25.75, which is passed on to the intern. We require a receipt from the fingerprinting administrator, Cogent, in order for you to start, however, within 30 days of fingerprinting date we will need the original clearance certificate in order for the internship to continue. The original clearance certificate will come to the address you give when fingerprinted.
All internships are unpaid, and housing is not provided.
Interns are expected to work a minimum of two days per week, committing to at least 200 total hours for the Fall and Winter sessions, and four days per week, committing to at least 400 hours for the Summer session, with interns working full days (8:00AM until 5:00PM). Schedules may be flexible to work around school or job schedules. Interns are expected to start by early September, with an orientation scheduled for September 5th, 2017 from 9AM-2:30PM.
