Aquarist
JOB SUMMARY: Demonstrate excellent representation of the aquarium at all times through a positive, can-do attitude and teamwork focused work ethic.
Aquarists are responsible for maintaining facility standards and expectations for the appearance and upkeep of assigned exhibits, associated life support systems, and the care of assigned animals. This position will be assigned to specific areas within the aquarium and can also be called upon for other areas. While the Aquarist has a primary focus on fish and invertebrates, the expectation is to be knowledgeable in maintaining coral systems and amphibian/reptile areas.
Minimum Job Requirements: Must be willing to consistently provide guest service above and beyond expectation.
Bachelor's degree in related discipline and 2 years’ experience in fish and invertebrates with strong background in reptiles and amphibians husbandry, preferably in an aquarium setting. Knowledge and skills with minor carpentry, plumbing, and painting is desired. The successful applicant must have the strength and endurance to perform physical demands associated with essential job functions; with or without assistance. SCUBA certification is required. Must possess a high-energy work ethic and a positive attitude.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

- Provide exceptional care to all assigned animals and exhibits including daily cleaning, water quality, maintenance, feeding, and health assessments.
- Maintain public display exhibits and back-of-house areas to the highest quality standards.
- Work with the Senior Medical Aquarist and veterinary team to maintain high animal health standards including participating in procedures and necropsies.
- Maintain current up to date knowledge on biology, ecology and husbandry of all animals being cared for.
- Participate in the construction and care of exhibit life support systems, including routine preventative maintenance on equipment.
- Participate in the development and implementation of husbandry procedures, techniques and practices.
- Maintain appropriate written and computerized animal care records.
- Mentor assigned departmental volunteers or interns.
- Frequent scuba diving in all types of varying conditions.
- Be a role model for staff demonstrating positive customer service and teamwork with other departments and visitors at Mystic Aquarium.
- Ensure all husbandry areas are kept clean, organized and hazard free.
- Respond to emergency calls (if on duty).
- Participate in Aquarium related education, PR and membership programs including facility tours.
Safety/Security
- All employees are responsible for working in a safe manner at all times.
- Every employee must properly use, and keep in good order, all personal protective equipment (PPE) supplied to them as protection from recognized hazards.
- Every employee must report any unsafe condition
- Every employee must have a working knowledge of all Facility wide, and Department specific, safety procedures that relate to their position, including, but not limited to: Emergency Evacuation, Lockdown Procedure, and Fire Extinguisher Use.
Perform all other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
