Dallas Zoo
North Savanna Interns
The Dallas Zoo’s College Internship Program provides an interesting and rewarding learning opportunity for currently enrolled undergraduate or post-graduate students at an accredited college/university in the United States. Interns become actively involved in the Zoo’s animal care departments, conservation/research efforts, operations, and administrative positions.
The Giants of the Savanna displays elephant, giraffe, zebra, antelope species, ostrich, and guinea fowl together in a large, naturalistic exhibit. The Dallas Zoo is the only zoo in North America displaying elephant and giraffe together. Interns will be a part of preparing for and monitoring this mix of species and in maintaining a separate warthog exhibit.
The North Savanna Intern will assist the keepers with daily animal care, exhibit and barn maintenance, enrichment and animal observations. The intern will observe training sessions and assist the keepers with operant conditioning. He/she will assist keepers in providing for giraffe in the public feeding exhibit and in presenting keeper talks. The intern will complete an assigned project related to better understanding and management of the animals within the North Savanna section (giraffe, zebra, antelope, ostrich, guinea fowl and warthog). Unique opportunities include: monitoring elephant mixes with North Savanna animals, and observing animal transfers, introductions, and veterinary procedures.
