Primates Keeper
The Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader of animal conservation and is an AZA accredited institution. We’re located on a 64 acre campus in the heart of vibrant downtown Indianapolis, and a top tourist destination in the Midwest. In addition to our animal exhibits, gardens, and aquarium, we support local and international animal conservation efforts. The Zoo is a private, 501(c)(3) organization.
The Primates Keeper cares for a collection that includes Orangutans, Lemurs Gibbons, Otters, Bats, and other animals.
To work with us as a full time Primates Keeper, you must have a bachelor degree from an accredited college/university in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, or other life-science field and at least two (2) years of professional work experience with apes, primates, bats, or lemurs. Keeper level (Keeper or Senior Keeper) is based upon experience.
Experience or interest in training animals is necessary as this person will be integrated into the training team. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, professional demeanor and professional appearance due to regular visitor contact, seasonal keeper chats, and media events. Must have proven decision making/problem solving skills, good observational skills. Must be temperamentally suited to working with the collection. Must be safety oriented.
Working with Orangutans requires a special skill set that includes, but is not limited to:
- Willingness to develop relationships with Great Apes by treating them as equal partners in the relationship.
- Demonstrates patience, gentleness, respect, and consistency with animals in their care.
- Must be able to create or implement behavioral enrichment techniques.
- Must be able to teach new behaviors as directed.
- May assist with exhibit modification.
The Primates Keeper will be cross-trained in other animal care areas. Work includes but is not limited to exhibit and animal holding area maintenance, diet preparation, training animals, record keeping, and assisting veterinary staff as needed. The Indianapolis Zoo encourages staff involvement in research, education, conservation, training, and all aspects of animal care.
The successful candidate must be highly motivated and, once trained, able to work independently with limited supervision. As part of a small, cohesive team must also be able to function cooperatively, and make positive contributions as a team member.
