Seasonal Bird Keeper

The Indianapolis Zoo is seeking applicants for a Keeper (part-time or seasonal) for our Birds / Flights of Fancy Aviary department.  The position responsibilities include guest service and interpretation duties in mixed species aviaries, daily husbandry of variety of bird species, conducting informal presentations to the general public throughout the day, as well as helping with special projects.  Soft bill and/or psittacine experience is preferred, but not required. Part-time keepers may work up to 29 hours per week, generally work year round, and must have a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences.  Seasonal keepers generally work 35 – 40 hours, but employment ends by Oct. 1.  A High School degree/G.E.D is required for seasonal keepers. 

 

Applicants must display a professional attitude and appearance to both visitors and co-workers.  Position requires a great deal of interaction with the general public, necessitating excellent public speaking skills and the ability to provide outstanding customer service.  Must be temperamentally suited to work with the public as well as a variety of bird species. 

 

Will perform manual work involving the care and maintenance of the animals and exhibits under his/her care.  Directly responsible for the health and well-being of the collections assigned to his/her care.  Must be safety-oriented and adhere to safety protocols.

 

Further the position requires the following:

 

  • Follow all safety Policies and Procedures of the Indianapolis Zoo
  • Minimum of one (1) year of animal care experience
  • Completing daily and weekly data entry
  • Will be required to learn and implement species quarantine procedures as directed by Area Manager / Curator
  • Must be able to participate in area chats, feeds and behind the scene tours.

 

 

Experience:  Minimum of one (1) year of work/internship experience working in animal care, preferably with birds.   Must have strong observational skills.  Must be a strongly team-oriented with excellent communication (both written and oral) skills.  Will be required to work mandatory overtime, weekends and holidays.

 

Salary:  Commensurate with experience

 

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent is required for seasonal keepers.  Bachelor degree from an accredited college/university in life sciences is required for part-time Keepers.
