National Aviary
Flitezone Bird Show and Conservation Internship
Interns considering a career in the animal care and training field will work under the direct supervision of the National Aviary's Education Trainers. The internship focuses on the care and training the Education collection comprising approximately 80 birds: hornbills, parrots, birds of prey and other mixed species. These birds appear in free flight shows and other education settings including classes, outreaches, and encounters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Care for birds in the education collection
- Prepare diets for parrots and birds of prey
- Observe various bird behaviors
- Learn operant conditioning techniques for training show and husbandry behaviors
- Assist with free-flight bird shows
- Create animal enrichment
- Public speaking
- Conservation education
- Assist with in-house and outreach education programs
- Participate in formal intern workshops
- Maintain enclosures
Fall 2017 Internship:
- Accepting Resumes: June 15 - July 31, 2017
- Internship Start Date: September 5, 2017
- Internship End Date: December 15, 2017
Winter/Spring 2018 Internship:
- Accepting Resumes: October 15 - November 15, 2017
- Internship Start Date: January 9, 2018
- Internship End Date: May 11, 2018
Experience Required
Education, Experience and Skills:
Education Trainers and interns work in a very fast-paced environment.
Be able to lift 50 pounds
Prepare diets that include mice and chick
Work as a member of a team and independently
Be a self-starter with a positive attitude
Interact positively with the public
Additional Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Work a minimum of 3 days a week for fall and spring semesters and 5 days a week for the summer
Must be willing to work weekends and holidays
Must be willing to work 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
