Maintenance Diver
Position Purpose: Helping the Dive Operations Manager (DOM) in daily operational responsibilities within the diving program, including overseeing dive volunteers. Responsible for the enforcement of policies and procedures set forth by the Diving Manual. Assist with the daily dive operations both in and out of the water.
Essential Functions:

Assists with routine maintenance of all diving records, and dive related gear

Ensures that volunteer divers perform in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures in the Dive Manual

Required to stop any diving practice deemed unsafe as described in the WOW Diving Manual

Assists with the member selection, testing and scheduling of the volunteer dive program

Assists with the maintenance of volunteer divers’ paperwork and time records
-
Maintains strong knowledge base of diving industry standards, diving physiology, equipment and techniques in order to ensure WOW’s compliance with all relevant safety standards

Assists with supervising volunteers in regards to training in exhibit maintenance, diving safety, feeding show techniques, exhibit interpretation, and emergency procedures

Fill WOW SCUBA cylinders. Insure proper maintenance of SCUBA air compressor

Works as a dive tender for exhibit feeding shows including trouble shooting technical problems. Assume the responsibility for diver rescue if necessary. Help maintain and upgrade equipment used in these shows.

Work with other staff to help with exhibit maintenance and collecting as time allows.

Performs any other dive office related task as needed.

Works with the life support, water quality and veterinary staff in monitoring water quality and life support systems

Coordinates daily activities through effective communication with staff and volunteers

Assist WOW staff, volunteers, and visitors as needed in a pleasant, professional and courteous manner

Performs other job related duties as assigned in order to achieve the goals and mission of WOW
Requirements:
-
ADVANCED and RESCUE SCUBA Certifications.
-
Current CPR/1st Aid, AED, and O2 Administration certifications.

Two years preferably in an aquarium or zoo.

Preferred 50 logged dives.

Preferred experience with SCUBA cylinder fill stations/compressors.

Preferred experience using full-face masks and underwater communication systems.

Must have good communication skills, both written and verbal.

Valid driver’s license

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays

No history of allergy related to animals or plants which may interfere with ability to work

Willingness to follow all procedures and use of personal protective equipment when necessary, as this position can involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous/unpredictable animal species, large machinery, restraint devices, and exposure to chemicals
Mental: Requires a relatively high degree of concentration and attention to the needs of all dive operations and divers and ensure precise record keeping. Possess an affinity for animals, educational orientation, and conservations ethic. Requires ability to follow and convey written and verbal instructions. Ability to identify problems and determine effective solutions in a wide range of situations.
Physical: Requires walking/standing approximately 70% of the time, sitting 15% of time, forward bending and crouching 15% of the time. Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds. Requires the ability to move about within exhibits containing rocky and/or uneven surfaces. Ability to pass all required physicals and swim test to meet WOW/OSHA standards and be certified to dive in aquarium exhibits. Unrestricted SCUBA diving as required.
Environmental: Requires capability of performing essential job functions in animal holding areas, exhibit space and mechanical rooms where spaces are small and tight, and in office environments with climate control and good lighting. The noise level in the work area may be loud at times. Also requires capability to perform essential job functions in outdoor environments and be capable of travel by various means.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle any of the dive and husbandry-related equipment, operate computers and other general office equipment. Must be able to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
Audible: Requires the ability to effectively communicate in person and via telephone with management, public speaking, staff and outside vendors.
Visual: Requires the ability to observe divers and dive operations to ensure the safety of all people involved in dive operations. The ability to observe physical characteristic changes in the animals and their environments, operate office equipment including computers and read written instruction and other documentation. Specific requirements include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
