Dynasty Marine/Aquarium Encounters Fall Internship

Organization: Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters/Dynasty Marine Associates Inc./ (AZA Member)
Location: MARATHON, FL, United States
Job or Internship: Internship

Overview

Dynasty Marine Associates, Inc., is a highly respected supplier of Caribbean marine life to public aquariums and zoos throughout the world. Their newest interactive aquarium, Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters (FKAE), is seeking the best and brightest candidates to fill open internship positions. Selected individuals will learn key components of the aquarium industry while participating in a fast-paced, hands-on work environment. Activities include, but are not limited to; animal husbandry, cleaning and upkeep of tanks, organizing facility, daily feeding (yes, even the sharks!), conducting tours, interacting with the public, and helping staff with special projects including tank repair, plumbing, veterinary procedures, and general maintenance. There is no “typical” day at FKAE because there is always something new going on. This internship does not include collection diving for Dynasty Marine; however opportunities to conduct dives for maintenance/cleaning in the FKAE Tanks may exist for SCUBA certified individuals who demonstrate responsibility and integrity. There will be opportunities to spend 1-2 days at Dynasty Marine during the internship.

Requirements

Applicants should be at least second year undergraduate students in an accredited degree program for marine biology, zoology, or a related field and have the desire to pursue a career in the zoo/aquarium field . Recent graduates also accepted. Applicants should be able to lift and carry loads of ~30lbs, be comfortable swimmers, possess a “can do” attitude, and be willing to get their hands dirty! A background in Caribbean fish identification is helpful, but not required. Applicants should have a strong desire to promote public awareness of our marine world and an aptitude for (or willingness to improve) public speaking skills.

Location

The FKAE facility is located in Marathon, Florida, in the heart of the beautiful Florida Keys.

Duration

Interns should commit at least 12+ weeks at 30-35 hours per week to be considered for an internship. Interns are welcome to seek outside employment and additional activities, as long as these do not interfere with their responsibilities to FKAE. Opportunities to extend the internship experience after the internship is complete may exist. Selection for an internship position is in no way a guarantee of employment.

Housing and Financial Support

This is a volunteer internship. Housing is not available. A personal vehicle or bicycle is recommended for transportation to and from the internship site, grocery store, etc.… FKAE is happy to work with colleges/universities to ensure that selected interns receive course credit for completed internships.

Experience Required

2nd Year Undergraduate
