Operations Manager

Position: Operations Manager

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Reports To: Park General Manager

 

Position Summary

The Operations Manager is responsible for support of all functions of admissions, guest relations, rides, park quality, security, onsite membership sales, traffic control, onsite premium product sales, and overall daily operations ensuring a great guest experience is delivered each day in a clean, quality- focused park/zoo.

 

Essential Functions (including but not limited to):

  • Actively serves as a leader within Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo reaching out beyond functional areas of responsibility. 
  • Plays a key role in the Operations team daily management, leading the Daily Duty Officer Program and serving as Park Duty Officer focusing on park presence and quality standards.
  • Supports management of assigned areas including admissions, guest relations, rides, park quality, security, onsite membership sales, traffic control, onsite premium product sales, and overall daily operations of the Zoo. 
  • Provides and ensures subordinates provide excellent internal and external guest service at all times. 
  • In coordination with the Park General Manager, manages the departmental budgets.  
  • Manages departmental employees and volunteers including hiring, training, safety, evaluation, motivation, discipline, and termination. 
  • Plans special events coverage, movement of people and vehicles, and safe ingress/egress.  Planning also includes initiating required permits.
  • Ensures quality guest service by actively implementing new strategies that will enhance safety, security, and guest experience Zoo-wide.
  • Oversees the ride/attractions program including ensuring employees follow ride, ride vehicle, and ride area safety guidelines, providing position-specific safety and operations training, and holding employees accountable for following all safety standards and rules. 
  • Partners with Operations management/security team to monitor weather conditions and ensure personnel respond appropriately in conditions of inclement weather. 
  • Partners with Operations management team for developing, implementing, and updating emergency and weather equipment communications plans.  
  • Ensures company and regulatory compliance related to functional areas of responsibility.  Enhances, develops, implements, and enforces policies and procedures of functional areas of responsibility.
  • Closely monitors revenues and ensures that established goals are met and progressive growth is achieved.
  • Participates in Operations Department financial planning and department revenue plans.
  • Recommends to Operations Management new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in safety and efficiency related to functional areas of responsibility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Two years of college or vocational/technical school.
  • Minimum of three to seven years guest service and operations management experience in zoos/aquariums, theme parks, Entertainment/Hospitality industry.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. 
  • Must have the ability to follow specific instructions and also be comfortable self-directing.
  • Capacity to anticipate: ability to think ahead and plan over multi-year time span.
  • Capacity to change: ability to identify and correct operational problems quickly. 
  • Management: the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Must be able to think logically and solve problems with minimal guidance. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be flexible and have the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude with the public.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and contribute effectively to the department.

Other Requirements

  • Conducts all activities in alignment with AZA standards and guidelines, all relevant laws and regulations, safety standards, and standards that ensure animal welfare.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to west central Florida (i.e., heat, rain, or cold).
  • Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must have the ability to walk park daily in order to maintain a visible in-park presence for guests and staff. (outside environment with varying weather conditions).
  • Must be willing and able to work varied and long shifts including holidays, weekends and in support of events as needed.
  • Must be able to plan for, work, and staff specials events and exhibits as well as be available for unexpected shifts.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, standing, reaching, and walking.
  • Must have ability to navigate paved as well as uneven sites and pathways.
  • Must be proficient with Word and Excel and be able to adapt well to various other computer programs.
