Animal Welfare Intern

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Animal Welfare Intern will assist the behavioral monitoring program at Lincoln Park Zoo, with a primary focus on African penguins. The intern will be trained to use the ZooMonitor app to record African Penguin behavior, and, once trained, may assist in training ZooMonitor volunteers for additional data collection. During the internship, the intern will also be responsible for collecting observational data on at least one other species. Finally, the intern will be involved in basic data analysis and be expected to give a summary presentation at the end of their internship.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assist with daily behavioral monitoring of African penguins using the ZooMonitor app
  • Assist training ZooMonitor volunteers on African penguin behavioral monitoring
  • Assist with behavioral monitoring of at least one other species
  • Assist with analysis of ZooMonitor data

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Learn standardized behavior recording methods and become proficient using ZooMonitor to record behavior
  • Learn about the behavior of African penguins
  • Strengthen interpersonal communication and leadership skills by working in a team environment and training volunteers on data collection
  • Develop skills in data analysis, including using dashboard visualizations of behavior data
  • Develop oral presentation skills

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in other ZooMonitor projects as needed.
  • Provide general organizational assistance with ZooMonitor activities as requested.
  • Be responsible for data organization, cleaning, and backup as advised.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Dr. Katherine Cronin.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledgeable of the Zoo’s mission and philosophy
  • Interest in observing penguins for several hours per week from visitor area
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, and problem solving mentality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, including managing time and prioritizing tasks efficiently
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills including ability to work in a team setting with diverse groups
  • Ability to represent Lincoln Park Zoo in a professional manner at all times
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Coursework in animal behavior preferred
  • Coursework in research design and/or statistics preferred

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Recent Bachelors degree in biology, psychology, animal sciences, or related field (within the last 2 years or expected May 2017). 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to remain standing for long periods of time
  • Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, rain, heat, cold, etc.
  • No impairment of sight that might interfere with ability to conduct observations

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience observing animals and/or conducting scientific research; preference for those that have observing animals and analyzing behavioral data.
