Natural Science Curator I

Division Information:

The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 5,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.

Description of Work:

This position reports directly to the Aquarium Curator. The Conservation Horticulturist will oversee the daily maintenance and care of native and landscape plants on the Aquarium grounds and in exhibits that are used for aesthetic, education, research, and conservation purposes.  Primary duties include:

  • Install and water plants to complete landscape project goals; plant removal/ relocation using tools and accepted horticultural planting techniques
  • Collecting and purchasing of plant, may require obtaining proper permits
  • Maintaining accurate records including pesticide log
  • Identifying and maintaining watering and irrigation needs of the collection
  • Maintaining on-site greenhouse
  • Implement control methods and safely handle materials to reduce pests and to ensure animal, visitor, and employee safety
  • Train technicians, volunteers and interns in horticultural techniques and safe equipment operation around visitors and the aquatic animal collection
  • Able to lift heavy materials and perform manual tasks

Weekend and holidays work hours are required. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license. 

A skills assessment may be conducted during the interviewing process for this position.

Experience Required

**To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Experience with plant maintenance for interior and exterior landscape in an Aquarium, Zoo, Museum, Nature Center, Arboretum, Botanical Garden or Nursery. 2. Experience in observation of plant problems, such as disease and insect control. 3. Experience applying methods in landscape techniques. 4. Experience climbing ladders and rocks and working from heights. 5. Must obtain a North Carolina Public Pesticide Operator’s Certification from North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA) within 3 months of hire. Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in Biology, Zoology, Botany or other natural science curriculum related to the area of assignment and one year of experience in a natural science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
