Husbandry Interns (Aquarium)

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is seeking applicants for our Husbandry Internship program. 

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is seeking applicants for our Husbandry Internship Program. Several internship opportunities are available to hard working, self-motivated candidates interested in developing their careers and contributing to the success of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. This program offers practical, on-the-job experience for those seeking a career in an Aquarium field. Positions are available Fishes and Inverts, Water Chemistry, Aviculture and Quarantine working 24-32 hours a week. 

Positions Available:

FISHES AND INVERTS – This position assists staff with daily animal husbandry for a diverse collection of fishes and invertebrates. Duties include animal observations, servicing animal habitats and holding areas, preparing diets, feeding the animal collection and interacting with guests for animal talks and public feeds.

This program offers practical, on-the-job experience for those seeking a career in an Aquarium field. Positions are available Fishes and Inverts, Water Chemistry, Aviculture and Quarantine working 24-32 hours a week. 

Positions Available:

FISHES AND INVERTS – This position assists staff with daily animal husbandry for a diverse collection of fishes and invertebrates. Duties include animal observations, servicing animal habitats and holding areas, preparing diets, feeding the animal collection and interacting with guests for animal talks and public feeds.

AVICULTURE – This position assists Aviculture staff with the daily care of a diverse collection of birds, including penguins, raptors, parrots and budgerigars. Duties include animal observations, servicing animal habitats and holding areas, preparing diets, feeding the animal collection and public speaking for animal talks. This Aviculture department also runs the Penguin Pass program taking guests behind the scenes and teaching conservation messaging. 

QUARANTINE – This position works at the Audubon Aquatics Center (AAC), the support facility of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. This facility hosts a diverse collection of sharks and fishes, and hosts the Coastal Wildlife Network Stranding Program. Interns will get a well- rounded experiences that includes animal care, exhibit maintenance, water chemistry and life support. The AAC is not open to the general public. 

WATER CHEMISTRY - This position assists the water quality lab staff with monitoring water quality and chemistry parameters for all systems at the Aquarium. Duties include performing tests with spectrophotometer pH and dissolved oxygen probes, recordkeeping and coliform testing. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in environmental conditions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to climb stairs, kneel, and squat

General Requirements

  • Must have the ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Prefer candidates that are pursuing a degree in a Biology related field.
  • Must commit to a schedule.
  • Must pass a background check
  • May be subject to random drug screening
  • Must have strong communication skills and be comfortable engaging a diverse audience.
