Cosley Zoo

Cosley Zoo is a small institution which exhibits native illinois wildlife and domestic farm animals. As a small facility, staff is very team-oriented and performs a great variety of tasks, which leads to abundant learning opportunities.

Zookeeper Part-time

Responsible for the daily welfare of a collection of native animals and maintenance of their enclosures. This is a part-time year round position working 28 hours/week.

  • Attendance at work site required every day.
  • Effective use and supervision of all available human resources, materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Perform scheduled routine feeding, cleaning, and general husbandry for domestic and wild animals.
  • Work effectively as a member of a team in all animal areas.
  • Maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures.
  • Oversee animal-related tasks and areas as assigned. 
  • Maintain inventories of animal feed and various animal supplies as assigned.
  • Monitor health and behavior of animal collection and communicate changes to supervisors
  • Oversee administration of medications, restraint or transport as applicable.
  • Report repairs and maintenance needs of enclosures, equipment and grounds.
  • Participate in behavioral husbandry programs for enrichment, training and behavioral analysis as assigned.
  • Interact courteously with the public offering education, information, assistance, and control to enforce the policies and procedures of the Wheaton Park District and Cosley Zoo.
  • Interact in a friendly and professional manner with zoo staff and colleagues.  
  • Maintain and submit accurate written records and reports, including enrichment evaluations, training logs and daily reports.
  • Monitor and control water quality in water features. 
  • Assist with special events, fund-raisers, and educational programs as requested.
  • Participate in staff education and in-service training.
  • Facilitate animal care volunteer and intern training and mentorship as assigned,
  • Assist with ex situ and in situ conservation projects as assigned.
  • Display excellent written and verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Operate all zoo equipment such as skid-steer tractor and truck efficiently and safely.
  • Must follow, administer and implement Wheaton Park District and Cosley Zoo policies and guidelines.

Experience Required

BS Degree in animal husbandry, biology, zoology or related field required. Equivalent training and experience in zoos or other animal care facility considered. Experience in an AZA accredited institution preferred. A valid Illinois driver’s license is required.

Salary

$11-$12/hour
