Aquarist-Animal Holding

The Aquarist of Animal Holding is based at the Animal Research and Care Center (ARCC) and is responsible for performing aquarium husbandry duties for all animal holding and quarantine facilities. He or she will work with the ARCC team and the Manager of Collections to carry out all daily procedures related to the care and maintenance of marine specimens and their holding environments. The Aquarist of Animal Holding will support the Collecting and Husbandry teams to care for their collections within the animal holding facilities. He or she will communicate relevant Husbandry activities taking place at the ARCC with the various management staff and Husbandry Division teams. When called upon, the Aquarist of Animal Holding will also perform duties related to the area and maintenance of MBA exhibits, as well as the care of animals in the field and during transport.

Core Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day care of animals held in quarantine (ARCC, Tuna Research and Conservation Center, Tropical Holding) and all off-site animal holding facilities.
  • Performs general aquarium and holding facility maintenance without direct supervision.
  • Diet preparation for captive specimens.
  • Performs duties related to the accession and transfer of specimens entering and leaving holding facilities.
  • Assists ARCC team. Staff veterinarian and husbandry staff in carrying out medical treatments.
  • Assist Husbandry and Collecting departments in their collection and transport efforts.
  • Daily assessment of animal health.
  • Maintains animal holding facilities at a standard of quality consistent with applicable MBA Husbandry Protocols.
  • Maintenance of large aquariums and holding tanks that may require SCUBA.
  • Frequent work involving the use of hazardous chemicals.
  • Works with Husbandry and Collections staff members to coordinate animal holding logistics and animal transfer logistics.
  • Record keeping as required by AZA and in-house protocols.
  • Performs general aquarist duties as required. This may include maintenance of MBA exhibits and may include annual exhibit assignments.
  • Monitor discharge of water to assure compliance with appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • May be called upon to supervise Aquarist Trainee's, Assistant Aquarists, Interns, and Volunteers.
  • Will participate in field collection, transport, and transfer activities.

Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum two years' experience at a public aquarium.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology or related field preferred.
  • Valid California driver's license with an insurable record.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of aquarium life support system equipment, and aquarium water chemistry.
  • Fundamental understanding of marine habitats and marine organism natural history.
  • Fundamental understanding of tropical closed systems, disease recognition and treatment.
  • Working history of the set-up, maintenance and care of specimen holding tanks.
  • Demonstrated ability to detect and diagnose fish disease.
  • Able to work in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Experience with food preparation and knowledge of basic animal nutrition.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Technical problem solving skills as they relate to Aquarium LSS.
  • Familiarity and ingenuity with building/plumbing supplies and materials.
  • Ability to enter data into an electronic database - familiarity with Word and Excel documents.

Desired Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • SCUBA certification highly desired.
  • Ability to pass an occupational/scientific dive physical examination (if applicable
