Seasonal Program Animals Keeper

Job Title: Seasonal Program Animal Keeper            

 Department: Program Animals and Birds                            

Reports to: Assistant Curator of Birds and Program Animals and Lead Keeper of Program Animals                                                                   

FSLA Status: Non-Exempt                                                                                                  

Job Status: Seasonal                             

Job Purpose: This is a seasonal, 40 hr/wk, position that is responsible for providing show support to our free flight bird show within the Program Animal department. This position reports to the department’s Lead Keeper and Curators. This is an entry level position. The amount of bird handling will be directly related to prior experience, however learning opportunities for the less experienced candidate will be abundant. This seasonal position runs from approximately April 10, 2017-Sept 5, 2017

             

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

  • Daily husbandry at the Wildlife Theater where we house our show bird collection. This includes, but is not limited to, hawks, falcon, owls, parrots, vulture, and crow.
  • Maintain clean and safe animal areas.
  • Prepare the theater for daily shows.
  • Provide positive experiences while interacting with zoo guests including adults and children of all ages.
  • Provide behind the scenes show support for our free flight bird show and conduct live animal encounters to educate zoo guests.
  • Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement
  • Any other miscellaneous projects/assignment assigned by Zoo Atlanta’s Birds and Program Animals management team

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Required
  • Excellent ability to comfortably interact with guests including adults and children of all ages.
  • Ability and willingness to safely handle potentially dangerous animals
  • Ability to accurately maintain written records
  • Effectively communicate, both written and orally
  • Great team working skills and positive attitude
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
  • Ability to commit to 40 hrs/wk through the duration of the position
  • Preferred
  • Experience handling birds in an education setting
  • Experience public speaking in a formal or informal setting

 

Education

High School Diploma required. In pursuit of, or in possession of, a Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Driving Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to drive a golf cart on zoo grounds. Applicants must consent to a MVR verification that is acceptable per Zoo Atlanta’s auto liability insurance carrier’s guidelines to perform this function.

Physical Demands

  • Applicant must be able to lift 50 lbs on occasion

Work Environment

  • This position requires the applicant to potentially spend significant time outdoors including heat and rain
