Conservation Engagement Curator - PDZA

SALARY: $6,287.33 - $7,073.25 Monthly
$75,448.00 - $84,879.00 Annually

Under the direction of the Conservation Engagement Manager of the Zoological and Environmental Education Division of Metro Parks Tacoma - plan, organize and direct the operations of assigned department; supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to conform to the following:

  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
Manage, direct and coordinate conservation engagement activities – including academic and community programs; fee-based activities including overnights and day camps; an extensive youth and adult volunteer program; and a robust program of on-site services for our guests.
Manage, direct, and coordinate the graphic service, volunteer office, and audience research program functions of the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
Oversee planning and delivery for all on-site messaging content and delivery.
Work with the Conservation Engagement Manager and Conservation Coordinator to plan and implement the Zoo's conservation agenda including citizen science, staff engagement, guest engagement, community engagement and legislative advocacy as required.
Manage, direct and coordinate the joint work of the Zoo and the Tacoma School District's Science and Math Institute (SAMI).
Coordinate with the staff at Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater to provide unified educational messaging, program support and evaluation services
Participate in all aspects of personnel management for the PDZA conservation engagement program; recommend and assist with hiring, annual performance evaluations, disciplinary action and termination; provide proper training on equipment and procedures; monitor and review work of program staff on a routine basis to ensure proper and timely completion of assignments. 
Direct the conservation engagement department in its involvement in capital project planning including planning, development, and the operations of new exhibits. 
Manage, formulate and develop effective educational projects, programs, printed and other materials and special events; direct staff in achieving educational missions, strategic plans and goals through a variety of demonstrations, exhibits, displays, printed material, presentations, programs and special events.
Effectively lead staff by promoting collaboration and team building and involving staff in decision-making and goal setting process. 
Prepare and maintain a variety of records and narrative/statistical reports related to assigned personnel, departments, budget, activities and operations; conduct special reports at the request of the Deputy Director. 
Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to the Deputy Director of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium regarding assigned functions; assist as needed in the formulation and development of fiscal policies, procedures and programs. 
Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff to include interns and volunteers, through the effective utilization of the Employee Performance Evaluation Program; assists or participate in the selection, training, development, counseling, disciplining and scheduling of assigned staff; conduct department staff meetings; perform on-site observations of performance. 
Serve on assigned committees; conduct meetings as assigned. 
Participate in long-rang planning to facilitate and improve conservation engagement and educational programs and operations. 
Communicate with District, department personnel and outside organizations regarding educational issues and concerns; coordinate projects, personnel and other matters related to assigned programs; exchange information, coordinate activities, provide leadership and resolve issues and concerns. 
Receive and respond to oral and written inquiries from the public; provide interpretation and explanation of District policies, procedures, activities and operations of assigned departments. 
Perform related duties as assigned.

Experience Required

Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Education, Conservation Psychology or related field. Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the education or conservation engagement department of an American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) accredited institution or other science institution. Must have three (3) years of supervisory experience directing the work of others in an education program setting
