Natural Science Curator III (Exhibit Curator)

Division Information:

The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC and is nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head.  The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 1600 animals in its collection. Over 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see the largest collection of sharks in North Carolina, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and think about how special North Carolina’s waterways are.


The Aquarium is seeking an Exhibits Curator to coordinate the non-living exhibits, educational displays, graphics, signs and related projects. The position supervises the Exhibits Department and is responsible for planning and managing new exhibit projects, developing and managing a department budget, coordinating workflow of the Exhibits Staff and maintaining existing non-living exhibits, graphics, signs and displays throughout the Aquarium. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, vision, knowledge of industry standards, the ability to meet deadlines, keep projects within budget and the ability to work with other Aquarium staff members. Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required.

Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license. 

A skills assessment may be conducted during the interviewing process for this position.

Experience Required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: **To receive credit, all experience must be included in the work history sections. See attached resume will result in an incomplete application. Any information omitted from the application, but included in the resume, will not be considered for qualifying credit.** 1. Experience in design and production of exhibits for Aquarium, Zoo or Museum. 2. Experience with computer design and graphics. 3. Experience with construction methods 4. Supervisory experience. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in zoology, botany, or other natural science curriculum related to the area of work assigned and three years of curatorial and/or teaching experience in natural science, including some supervisory experience; or three years as a science teacher if filling an educational position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Recruitment Range: $39,632 - $43,232
