Conservation Technician Intern (unpaid Summer Internship)

General Statement:
This is an unpaid three month internship assignment offered by the Conservation and Science Department at the Phoenix Zoo.  The Intern in this position will be introduced all aspects of the species conservation programs in place including animal husbandry, visitor education, field conservation activities and applied research.
 
Essential Duties:
  1. Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a WILD (friendly, helpful, positive and professional) working attitude and appearance. 
  2. Learn routine husbandry practices by feeding prescribed diets, monitoring and reporting diet consumption consistent with documented Standard Operating Procedures; observe and report any health or behavioral abnormalities of specimens; assist in handling, restrain and treatment of animals, under appropriate supervision.
  3. Assist with appropriate field conservation activities as assigned (i.e. transport, surveys, introductions, field project animal re-introduction, and off-site meetings).
  4. Assist with a research project in conjunction with Conservation & Science Department programs.
  5. Interact with both volunteers and Education staff to support designated public experiences and other communication activities and conduct at least one presentation about research, fieldwork or husbandry.

Experience Required

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Enrollment in undergraduate conservation biology or life science degree track preferred. Basic understanding of animal care and experience with animal husbandry preferred. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. Ability to work well independently and with others. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Ability to pass background check, MVR and clear TB test.
