Job Purpose:Zoo Atlanta is currently expanding its keeper staff and we are looking for enthusiastic applicants to join our team!  The Elephant Team, part of the Mammal Department, cares for two female African elephants, warthogs, and meerkats. It’s an exciting time to join the Zoo Atlanta team as we anticipate breaking ground on our Grand New View expansion this year which includes a new elephant barn and expanded habitat. We are seeking an experienced keeper to add to our team. Animal keepers are responsible for animal husbandry (including training and enrichment) and maintenance of exhibit, holding and public areas of the assigned department. This person will directly report to the area manager.


  • Maintain a high performance level of general keeper duties including excellent animal care and visitor interactions including scheduled on-ground talks to our guests.
  • Maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures.
  • Actively support and implement area policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care for the collection and the safety of staff and visitors
  • Participate in and support collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research and education.
  • Actively foster constructive attitudes and a team orientation among staff.
  • Support the mission, vision and values of Zoo Atlanta and its departments.
  • Oversee activities of interns and volunteers
  • Communicate effectively with supervisory staff and co-workers
  • When possible, actively participate in workshops, seminars, activities and conferences aimed at continually improving job knowledge and professional development.

  • Prior animal care experience at a zoological facility is preferred, especially working with elephants in protect contact environment.
  • Good communication skills, an enthusiasm for interacting with the public and a willingness to give regular talks to visitors, special groups, etc.
  • Experience with operant conditioning and enrichment techniques.
  • Must be able to function as a team member and support Zoo Atlanta’s mission.
  • Must be dependable and willing to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Possess basic writing and computer skills to complete reports and other written work as required.
  • Able to safely operate a vehicle and use light power tools after suitable training.
  • Completion of PEM I preferred


  • Four-year degree in biology, psychology, or related field; sufficient relevant experience will be considered in partial fulfillment of education requirement


  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license


  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather and have the physical ability to perform strenuous work, including lifting at least 50 pounds repetitively
