This is an unpaid position which focuses on the daily care of aquatic systems at the Texas State Aquarium, including the husbandry of fish, aquatic invertebrates, reptiles, and amphibians. This internship will have a strong focus on understanding aquaria water chemistry and life support systems, as well as an introduction to fish health and herpetology care. Interns can expect to gain hands-on experience with diet preparation and feeding, water quality monitoring, and exhibit maintenance. Interns will also have the opportunity to assist with dive operations and public programming. Hours per Week: 40 Number of Weeks: 12-15, to be determined by Intern Supervisor and applicant.
Requirements/Prerequisites: Must be 18 years old or older and posses valid Open Water SCUBA Certification. Interns must be able to work outdoors and in inclement weather, as well as in confined spaces and around loud noises. Interns must be able to lift at least 40lbs, and be able to climb stairs and ladders. Preference will be given to currently enrolled college students or recent graduates with a major in Marine Biology, Biology, Marine Science, Ecology, or another related major
