Research Fellow in Behavior and Endocrinology

Position Description:  Assist with management-based and research projects conducted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom®.  Report to the Science Operations Manager and Research Managers and work as part of the team to design, implement, analyze and disseminate a diverse array of studies that may focus on optimizing animal health, welfare and reproductive success, guest experience and messaging, and human-animal bond.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect animal visibility data.
  • Assist in the development of interactive, interpretive experiences in partnership with the scientific and education staff
  • Collect and /or analyze hormone samples (EIA) and behavioral data according to established methodologies
  • Assist in development, validation and maintenance of EIA systems
  • Assist in design of studies
  • Works in close association with other members of the Science Team
  • Participate in training data collectors and teaching relevant lectures and courses
  • Participate in Guest interactions a minimum of once a week
  • Communicate research results in staff seminars, scientific journals, conference presentations, and popular publications
  • Participate in relevant conferences and meetings

 

Term:  Two year appointment (with 6 month initial probationary period) beginning as soon as April 2017 as an independent contractor. This position is a Research Fellowship through New College of Florida based at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Applicant must be able to work in the United States. Employer will not pay fees associated with relocation or visa/work permit applications.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidate (defending within 3 months of start date) in animal behavior, conservation biology, behavioral psychology, endocrinology, biological chemistry, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in both behavioral data collection and enzyme immunoassay systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills for both formal and informal audiences of all ages
  • Demonstrated ability to publish scientific research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience conducting research in both in situ and ex situ settings preferred.
  • Strong experimental design and analytical skills, especially dealing with small sample sizes
  • Experience using standard statistical software packages (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, JMP)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented atmosphere, and in view of the public.

 

Preferred skills:

  • Experience in assay methods validation
  • Experience with visitor/community survey experimental design and techniques
  • Experience working in zoos/aquariums and in the field
