Assistant Supervisor of Theatrical Programs, Guest Experience

The Assistant Supervisor of Theatrical Programs, Guest Experience will work closely with the Supervisor of Programs and the Dive Operations department to facilitate the daily operations, management of the stage, and logistics of the 2017 Summer Theatre Season.  The Assistant Supervisor is responsible for acting as the onsite supervisor when the Supervisor of Programs is offsite.  The primary responsibility is an outdoor presentation about the history of the Monterey Bay.  In addition to this show, there will also be historic and improvisational theatrical programming within two of our exhibits at various times throughout the day.  This position will be required to work closely with other departments across the aquarium, to fulfill various needs throughout the theatrical season.  The Assistant Supervisor will also be required to learn some of the roles within the theatrical programming to perform as needed as an understudy.

Core Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the Supervisor of Programs and the Dive Operations Department, help to facilitate the rehearsal process and theatrical season at the Aquarium
  • Offer continuous feedback to summer actor staff on their performances
  • Act as a liaison to other departments for needs related to the theatrical programs
  • Responsible for daily inspections and minor repairs for all costumes, props, and selected equipment used for the theatrical programs
  • Perform all technical aspects of the theatrical programs
  • Responsible for conducting daily staff briefings and debriefings
  • Responsible for organizing program logistics and scheduling of nine summer acting staff
  • Maintain daily staff routines, which may include filling in for staff as necessary to deliver performances within the theatrical programming
  • Comply with the MBA Diving Safety Manual and safe boating operations
  • Assist Guest Experience with other interpretative duties as needed

Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education 

  • Two years of previous theater, acting and/or stage management experience
  • Previous leadership experience in a professional setting
  • Strong skills in organization and communication
  • Must pass, to the satisfaction of the Dive Operations Department, all safety related classes and drills including rescue and boater safety workshops. On the job training will be provided
  • Must be able to demonstrate a basic swimming ability
  • Must pass an MBA prescribed back physical
  • Ability to operate technical system (wireless microphones and IPOD)
  • Interest and enthusiasm in providing exemplary service to Aquarium guests

Desired Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • One year previous stage management experience
  • One year of experience working in a supervisory capacity
  • Previous experience performing scripted and improv-based productions
  • Ability to perform minor costume repairs if needed
  • Basic knowledge and experience operating small non-motorized watercraft such as canoes or kayaks
