Lead Actor, Guest Experience (SEASONAL)

The Lead Actor, Guest Experience will work with the Supervisor of Programs and the Assistant Supervisor of Theatrical Programs in the daily operations associated with the Monterey Bay Aquarium's summer theatrical season.  This position will be responsible for certain duties in the Assistant Supervisor's absence.  This includes running technology, caring for props and costumes and completing the set-up and break-down associated with the theatrical programs.  This position will also be responsible for learning and performing all roles encompassed within the Aquarium's theatrical productions.  The primary responsibility is an outdoor presentation about the history of the Monterey Bay.  The Lead Actor will operate historic non-motorized watercrafts including a tule boat and a traditional Chinese sampan, and will perform both on the water as well as on land interpreting the historic fishing practices of people who called the Monterey Bay home.  In addition to this show, there will also be historic and improvisational theatrical programming within two of our exhibits at various times throughout the day 

Core Responsibilities

  • Assume duties in the absence of Assistant Supervisor of Theatrical Programs such as running technology, minor costume and prop care, organization of actor spaces, and set-up and break-down of theatrical programs
  • Help run daily actor meetings
  • Act as a liaison to other departments in the absence of the Assistant Supervisor of Theatrical Programs
  • Act as mentor and resource for new acting staff
  • Deliver scripted performances in costume across multiple genres including improv and historic interpretation
  • Act as swing and learn all roles in all shows in order to step in for any part as needed
  • Operate technical equipment for performance sound and sound track
  • Operate historic non-motorized watercrafts and deliver basic choreographed boat movement related to outdoor program; on the job training will be provided
  • Assist Guest Experience with other interpretative duties as needed
  • Comply with the MBA Diving Safety Manual and safe boating operations
  • Responsible for daily deployment and stowage of non-motorized watercrafts and other program props; on the job training will be provided

Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • Previous theatre/acting experience
  • Strong skills in organization and communication
  • Ability to operate technical system (wireless microphones and IPOD)
  • Must pass an MBA prescribed back physical
  • Must pass, to the satisfaction of the Dive Operations Department, all safety related classes and drills including rescue and boater safety workshops; on the job training will be provided
  • Must be able to demonstrate a basic swimming ability
  • With training, ability to learn and deliver basic choreographed boat movement
  • Interest and enthusiasm in providing exemplary service to Aquarium guests

Desired Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • Two years theater/acting experience
  • Previous leadership experience in a professional, volunteer or educational setting
  • Previous stage management or assistant stage management experience
  • Strong improv skills
  • Ability to learn multiple roles
  • Basic knowledge or experience operating small non-motorized watercraft such as canoes or kayaks
