The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated exclusively to birds. Located in West Park on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, the National Aviary’s diverse collection comprises more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild.
The National Aviary is currently seeking to fill several new part-time interpretive educator positions. Interpretive Educators work under the direct supervision of the Director of Education and Visitor Engagement. Positions run year round.
Interpretive Educators are part of a dynamic and energetic education department performing all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects the National Aviary’s mission to inspire a respect for nature through an appreciation of birds. National Aviary Interpretive Educators will:
Operate and facilitate guest engagement in the National Aviary’s new virtual reality experience scheduled to open in April 2017;
Assist with guest engagement in the National Aviary’s daily activities and interactive programming
Provide interpretive support and communications for the National Aviary’s exhibits, birds and special events
Provide high quality visitor engagement and guest hospitality throughout the National Aviary’s exhibits and public spaces
Interpretive Educators work in a high-paced environment. Due to the nature of the work, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Undergraduate degree in Environmental Education, Education, Communications, Performing Arts, Zoological Sciences or related fields
Strong teaching, interpretation and presentation skills, as well as the ability to interact and communicate enthusiastically with a variety of audiences in a professional and productive manner
Ability to engage others, using initiative and proper professional judgment
Ability to work weekdays, weekends and holidays as scheduled; some evenings, outdoor work and offsite work may be required
Ability to perform some heavy physical labor such as lifting up to 50 lbs., reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
Proficiency and experience with standard computer software, virtual reality software, and/or virtual reality mechanics a plus. Training is provided.
Previous experience in an education department in a zoo, nature center, museum, or other informal learning center a plus
The successful candidate must be able to pass our required background investigations including FBI fingerprinting for Criminal Background, PA Child Abuse Clearance, and PA State Police Criminal Background Investigation, and ADP background investigation. A valid PA Driver’s License is desired.
Some experience in the Education Department of a zoo, nature center, museum, or other informal learning center is a plus.
