Summer Safari Day Camp Teachers

Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) is seeking experienced, creative teachers to lead elementary and middle school-aged children in weeklong summer camps at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

Teachers are responsible for curriculum development, lesson planning, and classroom management.  Duties include, but are not limited to, developing a weeklong curriculum, preparing activities and crafts, setting up the classroom, supervising teen class aides, and leading daily Zoo walks.

Applicants must have:

  • A college degree.
    • Background in education or environmental and wildlife topics preferred.
  • Experience teaching elementary school children.
  • Creative lesson-planning skills.
  • Knowledge of natural sciences and a love and appreciation for wildlife and conservation.

Summer Safari Day Camp runs for eight, one-week sessions from June 26 to August 18, 2017. Teachers are encouraged to work at least two weeks but no more than four.  Teachers are hired on weekly contracts and may select the weeks they work. Teachers are required to be onsite at the Zoo during the weeks they work Monday—Friday, 7:45am--3:30pm.  There will be a brief weekly staff meeting on Tuesday afternoons that may require teachers staying beyond 3:30pm.

There are two mandatory training dates for new teachers: Saturday, May 6 and Saturday, May 20. Accepted applicants must attend both mandatory dates in order to teach at Summer Safari Day Camp.
