Wildlife Specialist - Ungulates

Position Description

White Oak is seeking an experienced wildlife specialist who will perform as a member of the Animal Management team to achieve exceptional animal care and facility care standards in the Ungulate Area in order to sustain White Oak’s wildlife collection and conservation breeding programs.

 The successful candidate will have 3-5 years of experience working with antelope, okapi, giraffes, wild equids, wild cattle and rhinos in a managed setting or zoo.  The candidate will be self-motivated and an efficient self-starter with a strong work ethic, possessing strong organizational skills.   The candidate will be a team player with a positive attitude, making timely and sound decisions in a team environment.  

Essential Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Participate in the daily care of the animals in designated area, to include:  feeding, cleaning, medicating, training and enrichment activities;
  • Participate with animal restraint, hand rearing, animal transfers, introductions, operant conditioning; area research projects;  
  • Foster regular Wildlife department delivery of public education programs featuring the wildlife collection;
  • Assist veterinarian staff with animal care procedures, treatment and sample collection, as directed;
  • Notify supervisor of facility maintenance needs, supplies and animal feed needed in the Wildlife area;
  • Assist with minor animal care facilities maintenance including:  mowing, weed eating, pressure washing, dirt and substrate work, and limb pick up, and minor repairs;
  • Report facility and equipment care needs;
  • Maintain records and reports related to Wildlife collection;
  • Maintain, clean and organize work and break areas, food storage, food prep, vehicles and equipment;   
  • Observe and ensure area safety protocol, safe vehicle and equipment operation;
  • Assist with intern training as requested;
  • Participate with training including animal husbandry and management, ZIMS record keeping, research, conservation and education projects;
  • Perform other duties that are not specifically identified above, but are required to care for White Oak’s wildlife collection.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Four years of animal care experience with wild ungulates.  Experience with ungulate restraint preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication, and relevant basic computer skills;
  • Experience operating small equipment and farm machinery desired – mowers, weed-eaters, pressure washer, tractor or skid steer loader, utility/stock trailers.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects, climb a 5 foot ladder and work outdoors in all conditions ;
  • Excellent problem resolution skills along with outstanding communication and active listening skills;
  • Must be able to work holidays, nights and weekends when required;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
