Hours:  40 hrs/week 

Number of positions:  Two (2)

Location:  El Dorado Springs, MO

Responsibilities: The Saint Louis Zoo is hiring two (2) technicians to work in tandem to assist the Missouri Department of Conservation and Saint Louis Zoo staff with surveys for the American Burying Beetle and small mammal surveys of MDC sites near El Dorado Springs, MO.  The technicians will assist each other with pitfall trap installations, checking traps, assisting Zoo staff with reintroductions of this Federally endangered species, and handling to record morphometric measurements in addition to safely tagging and notching of beetles and small mammals.   This position offers an opportunity to work with the American Burying Beetle as part of a long-term recovery effort for this endangered species.  Lodging will be provided during the 5-day work week.

Qualifications: Attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, or related field experience preferred.   Small mammal trapping experience is a plus.  Must be willing to accept direction and follow proper safety guidelines and protocols for handling this endangered species.  Experience with pitfall trapping arrays and checking of traps is preferred but not necessary. Technicians must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and enthusiastic, possess a strong work ethic, and must work effectively with minimal supervision when required. Technicians must be able to walk several miles a day.  Technician will be expected to endure harsh field conditions (heat, humidity, ticks, chiggers, etc.). Technicians must have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable driving 4-wheel drive trucks. One field vehicle will be provided on site for surveys. All candidates must successfully complete a drug test and criminal background check.
