The San Antonio Zoo is seeking a full-time Aquarium Manager where the successful applicant will be responsible for the daily operations of the Aquarium Department’s diverse and growing aquatic life collection as well as its aquarist staff. The San Antonio Zoo’s aquatic life collection consists of 250+ freshwater and saltwater species of fish, and 50+ species of aquatic invertebrates in 172,000+ gallons of exhibit volume. Aquatic and semi-aquatic reptiles are part of the department’s responsibility as well. The San Antonio Zoo’s Aquarium Department is a progressive department striving to immerse its guests into the diverse world of aquatic wildlife through exhibitry, conservation, and education.
The Aquarium Manager will be responsible for training, supervising, observing, and evaluating all staff within the department, as well as project coordination, supply procurement, veterinary care and treatment scheduling, along with all aspects of daily husbandry. This position will assist in daily husbandry within the department as well as various office duties such as scheduling, employee records, specimen records, work orders, and purchase requests. Knowledge and understanding of various methods of filtration and their application is necessary for implementation within the department. It is essential that the successful applicant communicates clearly and effectively with the Director of Ectotherms and Animal Care Specialist staff along with staff from other departments within the zoo, and maintains a high level of leadership and energy in this position.
Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years experience with aquatic animal care and a minimum of 3 years experience in the zoo/aquarium profession. Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments. Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, zoology, biology, fisheries, or related fields preferred but may be substituted for experience.
