Video/Photo Intern (Unpaid)

The Video and Photo Intern will assist the head Videographer/Photographer in all aspects of production. The ideal candidate will have an interest in capturing a wide variety of images – from event photography to animal portraits to short documentaries – and exploring topics related to wildlife conservation, sustainability, animal welfare, and learning initiatives through video and photo projects. The intern will gain valuable hands-on experience working as a photographer/videographer in a non-profit organizational setting and will have the opportunity to contribute ideas for new projects. The intern’s contribution will include the creation of at least one summer-long video and/or photo project to execute from concept to completion. It is an unpaid part-time position, with a 20-hour per week requirement (must have flexibility for possible evening/weekend hours) and a 3-month minimum commitment.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with producing shoots – contact video/photo subjects, create shoot schedule
  • Assist with photo and video shoots as second camera, gaffer, or sound person as well as work on shoots independently. Shoots include event/product/architectural photography, human and animal portraits, and documentary video 
  • Touch up photographs
  • Assistant Editing – input and organize footage, set up timelines, find music, help with edit/color correction/audio mix/motion graphics
  • Organize photo database

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Further develop skills in video/photo/editing
  • Gain knowledge of a video/photo department’s operations in an organizational setting
  • Opportunity to contribute ideas and create new video/photo projects
  • Complete, as a culminating project, a video or photo project that adheres to brand guidelines and is an effective tool for communicating the zoo’s mission and message
  • Learn about a wide variety of animals, as well as the animal welfare, conservation and science, sustainability, and learning initiatives at Lincoln Park Zoo.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrate understanding and passion for photography/videography/editing and ideally also for animal welfare and conservation
  • Highly motivated, good problem solver, and detailed-oriented
  • Possess strong organizational and communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Works well in a team environment as well as independently
  • Maintains a positive and flexible approach to daily responsibility (last minute requests are common)
  • Ability to work within tight timelines and in a busy environment

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current student in Media Arts or related field
  • Experience with video cameras and DSLRs, production sound and lighting
  • Experience with photo and video editing with Adobe Creative Suite 
  • Interest in sustainability and conservation
