Internship Title: Prospect Park Zoo Animal Care Intern

Department:  Animal Department

Location:  Prospect Park Zoo
Start Date: Spring: 3/15/2017, rolling admission. Summer 5/1/2017, rolling admission

End date: 6 weeks from start date

Internship Schedule: Varied, but will include weekends and holidays.

Spring internships require four 8-hour work days, summer internships require five 8-hour works days. Extenuating or otherwise exceptional circumstances may be considered for less than the minimum required number of days, but no less than three 8 hour work days will be accepted.

Internship Description:

The goal of this internship is to provide a hands-on education and training in animal husbandry. PPZ interns are involved in many aspects of animal care including exhibit and enclosure maintenance, diet preparation, animal observation, animal handling (based on experience) and enrichment. Interns will also complete a project assigned by PPZ Animal Department management or a university assignment approved by PPZ. Project must be accomplished during the term and is required to successfully complete the internship.

Internship is unpaid and housing is not provided. Intern must provide their own footwear appropriate for working outdoors in all weather conditions

What You Will Learn:

  • How to perform safe, proper and humane care of assigned animals according to established protocols under the direction of the appropriate senior wild animal keeper and /or the supervisory/curatorial staff;
  • How to prepare animal diets according to established protocols under the direction of the appropriate senior wild animal keeper and/or the supervisory/curatorial staff;
  • How to perform safe and proper maintenance of assigned animal exhibits, holding facilities and associated service areas according to established protocols under the direction of the appropriate senior wild animal keeper and/or the supervisory/curatorial staff;
  • How to aid the general public and provide information concerning the Prospect Park Zoo, visitor services, exhibits and the animal collection;
  • How to perform other related tasks and duties at the instruction of senior animal keepers and/or the supervisory/curatorial staff.
  • Cultivate public speaking abilities through public interpretation of Sea Lion Training Demonstrations as need by the Animal Department.

 

What We Require:

 Physical Requirements:

  1. The position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions. 
  2. Tasks require manual dexterity and ability to safely use tools (e.g. drill, wire cutters, computer keyboard). 
  3. Some tasks require climbing, kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds.
  4. Current negative TB test

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Must successfully pass a background check.

2.       Interest in biology or a related field with an interest in an animal care career.

3.       Must be available on weekends and holidays

  1. Ability to represent WCS in a professional manner and to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, and the general public.
