The Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi is expanding our facility. As we make way for our 65,000-square foot, $50+ million Caribbean Journey wing expansion to open Spring 2017 (https://texasstateaquarium.org/caribbean/), we are looking for qualified, passionate, and dedicated professionals to join our team.
The Texas State Aquarium opened in 1990 and is the official aquarium of Texas. Corpus Christi is a rapid-growing community of over 300,000 people (http://www.ccredc.com/), situated right on beautiful Corpus Christi Bay (http://www.visitcorpuschristitx.org/index.aspx) and surrounded by coastal parks and sandy beaches.
The Aquarist I/II for the Fish and Herpetology department will provide advanced knowledge and care for aquatic animals including amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. They will clean and maintain aquarium exhibits and perform life support maintenance on all systems. The Aquarist I/II will prepare animal diets and feed according to established procedures and be responsible for the day to day maintenance of life support systems and water quality perimeters in assigned area.
This position will enter exhibits by use of SCUBA equipment to clean exhibitry, provide animal care, and/or feed so an Open Water SCUBA certification is required.
Additional duties include but are not limited to:
Ability to identify species in the collection and understand the taxonomy of those species.
Assist with the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures in assigned work areas.
Assist in design and set-up of displays.
Plan and direct the work of volunteers in primary areas of responsibility.
Communicate procedures and work duties to support staff when absent.
Aquarist I Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in marine biology or related field from a four year college or university is required with one year of experience working in a public aquarium/zoo. Any combination of education and experience would likely produce the required knowledge skills and abilities.
Aquarist II Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in marine biology or related field from a four year college or university is required with a minimum of three years of professional experience working with fish and marine invertebrates. Any combination of education and experience would likely produce the required knowledge skills and abilities.
