Position Summary - Horticulture Department

It is the responsibility of a BioPark Assistant Curator to supervise, plan and coordinate a variety of ABQ Bio Park services, activities and operations, including the acquisition, care, husbandry and disposition of assigned species within the ABQ BioPark's living collection at the Botanic Garden; to effectively manage reporting staff; the maintenance of exhibits and facilities; to coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies and the general public; and to provide responsible and complex staff assistance to higher level management staff.

The Assistant Curator will achieve his or her tasks and goals by working collaboratively with members of the ABQ BioPark Staff, Cultural Services Department Staff, other City of Albuquerque personnel and third-party groups and organizations as needed. The incumbent will create, foster and maintain a positive team-orientated work environment through effective leadership communication, coaching and mentoring of reporting staff. The incumbent must be able to work independently and as a member of a team in a dynamic, fast-paced professional environment.

As the Assistant Curator, this individual will lead a small team of gardeners and ensure that behavioral management practices support the ABQ BioPark's mission and core values. This position reports to higher level management staff of the ABQ BioPark, the Cultural Services Department and the City of Albuquerque.


Possession of a New Mexico Driver's License (Class D) or the ability to obtain by date of hire. 
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of a New Mexico Public Pesticide Applicator's License: 1A and 1B or 3A and 3B within six (6) months from date of hire.


Experience Required

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements Related education and experience may be interchangeable on a year for year basis. Bachelor's degree in botany, horticulture, agriculture or a related field, plus three (3) years of experience working with botanical, horticultural, arboricultural, or agricultural operations or similar facility, to include one (1) year direct supervisory or technical lead experience in an administrative capacity. International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification preferred.
