Seasonal Assistant Dive Safety Officer

Temporary/Seasonal Position – Hourly, Non-Exempt

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast.  The Aquarium has been consistently rated a Top Ten Aquarium in the country.  As a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is held to stringent requirements for animal husbandry, education and conservation.  The aquarium takes pride in being one of the leaders in marine science education in Oregon.  This year we will celebrate 25 years of educating and entertaining over 12 million visitors.

ASSISTANT DSO – SEASONAL

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Guest Dive Program: Aquarium customers may scuba dive in the Passages of the Deep exhibit (see http://aquarium.org/dive-the-aquarium/). The ADSO will present naturalist tours of exhibits to customers and act as in-water safety diver/ dive guide. 

  • Interpretive Dive Program: The ADSO will deliver spoken presentations to the public about Aquarium animals while submerged in Aquarium exhibits.  The ADSO will be certified to dive a full facemask and to operate underwater voice-communication equipment. 

  • Volunteer Program: Volunteers dive in Aquarium exhibits to assist aquarists with husbandry tasks.  The ADSO will both facilitate the dive department in coordinating dive volunteers as well as dive with volunteer teams in a wide range of exhibits.

  • Education: This seasonal position is a partial educational opportunity.  The ADSO will receive training and/or learning opportunities in order to: dive a dry suit, dive a full face mask, dive with and guide large sharks, operate an air compressor and fill station to fill scuba cylinders, operate field diving equipment such as lift bags, cave reels, surface marker buoys, identify local fish and invertebrate species, and run scientific scuba surveys.

Qualifications:

  1. Must be a certified Divemaster with a SCUBA recreational training organization (PADI, NAUI, SSI)

  2. Must have cold water diving experience and have logged at least 50 total dives

  3. Must be able to pass an AAUS medical and swimming examination

  4. Must obtain SCUBA dive accident insurance (equivalent to DAN Master Level)

  5. Must have current certification in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Oxygen First Aid for divers

  6. Must own or be willing to obtain a complete set of cold-water dive gear and provide proof of servicing within the previous 12 months

  7. Must be able to work weekends and holidays and some evenings if necessary

  8. Public speaking skills are required in small groups and with the public

  9. Must be able to exercise care and judgment when working in exhibits with animals

  10. Must be agile with a good sense of balance in order to maneuver around the exhibits and lift 50 pounds

  11. Must be physically able to perform laborious tasks in extreme weather conditions

  12. Must be able to adapt to an ever-changing work environment

    The Seasonal Assistant Dive Safety Officer, under direction of the Dive Safety Officer and ADSO, assists in the management of all aspects of the dive safety program, including overseeing and enforcing dive safety policies, following AAUS and OSHA guidelines for all divers and dive activities under the auspices of the Aquarium.  The candidate is responsible for assisting with the guest dive, interpretive, and dive volunteer programs, as well as for performing various daily tasks required by the dive program. This is a full time (40 hours/week) position from June 1st – September 30, 2017.
