Facilities Manager

This position participates in the development and implementation of Maintenance, Custodial, and Horticulture policies and procedures. This position secures estimates for labor, materials and other costs associated with Facilities maintenance and improvements. Directs and oversees cleaning, maintenance and landscaping of Zoo grounds as well as plans, designs and schedules facility projects. The Facility Manager guides and supervises the service, repair and preventive maintenance of buildings and building HVAC equipment, water systems, electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, and other aspects of Zoo facilities. Also, purchases hardware, tools and supplies in accordance with established procedures. Must be able to maintain accurate inventory records. Contributes in the selection, orientation and training from Maintenance, Custodial, and Horticulture teams. Correspondingly, supervises staff performance, providing performance evaluations, informal feedback and correction when appropriate. Furthermore, informs Zoo Operations Officer of serious or ongoing issues. Ensures workflow is efficient and effective, makes appropriate logistical decisions and planning for current and future workflow, including interdepartmental scheduling. Assumes other responsibilities as necessary to assure achievement of established objectives. 

Experience Required

Five years experience in development, implementation and managing of equipment, machinery, buildings and other facilities (in a zoological or aquarium setting is preferred). Experience as a team leader and experience working in or leading a formal, structured program is preferred. A Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from an accredited college or university in Construction, Management or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience (experience in an AZA facility is preferred). Requires a valid California driver’s license and good driving record. Good written and verbal communications skills are essential.

Further Comments

Under the general direction of the Zoo Operations Officer, this position is responsible for planning, managing and directing all work associated with Maintenance, Custodial, and Horticulture operations. This position requires collaboration with Zoo staff, contractors and the public to advance the Zoo’s mission of providing excellent guest experience, staff experience, and animal care.
