SEASONAL Position from June 5, 2016 – August 11, 2017 Full Time - 40 hours per week

  • June 5th – June 9th – Camp Prep / Training
  • June 12th – August 4th – 7 weeks of camp (no camp week of July 4th)
  • August 7th – August 11th – Wrap Up

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is currently seeking one (1) seasonal Summer Camp Aide for the Education Department.  This position will supervise children enrolled in our Zoo Summer Camp.  Will instruct and assist with camps based on the basic principles of life science, environmental science, zoology, ecology, and conservation science; will utilize hands-on activities, live animals and biofacts; and will assist Zoo Educators in developing activities, crafts and games that revolve around animal themes. In addition to conducting educational programs, other daily responsibilities include animal care and handling, camp prep and cleanup, light housekeeping, and record keeping.

Applicants must be available to work flexible hours between 7:30am to 4:30pm

Monday through Friday the full 9 weeks

Applicants must have completed two years of college and able to pass a Level II Background screening.  Must be able to stand for long periods of time and traverse Zoo grounds on foot in possibly adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and rain. Must be able to bend, squat, sweep, and lift 25 lbs. without difficulty.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biology, zoology and/or life science and previous teaching experience.  Must love kids and animals!  Previous teaching experience with children in an informal learning center such as a zoo, museum, nature center, or parks department is a plus.  An outgoing, self-starting, enthusiastic, team player personality combined with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances is essential for success in this position.  Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet search are required.
