Full Time – 40 hours per week

  • June 5th – June 9th – Staff Training
  • June 12th – August45th – 7 weeks of camp (no camp week of July 4th)
  • August 7th – August 9th – Wrap Up

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is currently seeking four (4) seasonal Summer Camp Instructors for the Education Department.   This position will be involved in all aspects of the Education Department including program design and execution.  Will instruct camps based on the basic principles of life science, environmental science, zoology, ecology, and conservation science; will utilize hands-on activities and biofacts; will develop activities, crafts and games that revolve around animal themes. In addition to conducting educational programs, other daily responsibilities may include animal care and handling, camp prep and cleanup, light housekeeping, and record keeping.

Applicants must available to work 8:00am to 4:30pm or 8:30am to 5:00pm

Monday through Friday the full 8 ½ weeks

Applicants must have completed two years of college and able to pass a Level II Background screening.   Must be able to stand for long periods of time and traverse Zoo grounds on foot in possibly adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and rain. Must be able to bend, squat, sweep, and lift 25 lbs. without difficulty.

A strong background in biology, zoology and/or life science.  Must love kids and animals!  Previous teaching experience with children in an informal setting (i.e. zoo, nature center, parks department) or formal setting is preferred.  Qualified candidates will be outgoing team-players, able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, flexibility, creativity, and an ability to interact positively with a variety of personalities and with a variety of ages.  Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet search are required.
