Intern Information

The Oregon Coast Aquarium Fish and Invertebrate Internship Program is designed as an educational opportunity to introduce basic animal care, training and husbandry skills for those with an interest in pursuing a future career in aquatic species husbandry utilizing a specially designed syllabus, teaching current industry methods.  The candidate will have an opportunity to develop various skills that will be utilized in assisting in the daily care and maintenance of tropical, temperate, marine and freshwater fishes and invertebrates.   The intern will be required to follow a syllabus, complete assignments, test, and be responsible for a final project under the supervision of assigned department staff.

Oregon Coast Aquarium

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast.  The Aquarium has been consistently rated a Top Ten Aquarium in the country.  As a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is held to stringent requirements for animal husbandry, education and conservation.  The Aquarium takes pride in being one of the leaders in marine science education in Oregon.  This year we will celebrate 25 years of educating and entertaining over 12 million visitors.  For more information, please visit www.aquarium.org.

INTERN POSITION

  • Responsible for progressing through a fast paced training program.  Progress will be done at the intern’s initiative through observation, hands on learning and completion of syllabus as assigned.
  • Required to complete all reading assignments and undertake specific applied syllabus projects such as daily animal diet preparations, upkeep of animal exhibits and areas, and administer daily enrichment, and assist in the husbandry/exhibit care.
  • Responsible for learning water quality testing methods and the administration of medication techniques, as progression through the syllabus is attainted.
  • Will participate in daily tasks as described in assigned syllabus.
  • Accurately maintain all written computer records and daily observations of birds.
  • Prepare, complete and present a final project as approved by staff.

INTERN QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have completed a minimum of two years of college, or be a recent college graduate in the field of biology, fish and wildlife science or other related animal fields - within the last two years.
  • Must be able to exercise care and judgement when working with animals and exhibits.
  • Must be able to physically perform syllabus related tasks in extreme weather conditions.
  • 40 hour weeks, with availability for weekends, holidays and evenings.
  •  Adapt to an ever changing environment.
  • Good written and communication skills are required, in addition to following written and oral instruction.

 

The Oregon Coast Aquarium does not provide, nor pay for housing – however there are other options available if you are accepted to our intern program.  If you are selected for an intern position you will be required to provide a minimum of three (3) references and pass a criminal history background check.  A valid driver’s license may be required.

Experience Required

Must have completed a minimum of two years of college, or be a recent college graduate in the field of biology, fish and wildlife science or other related animal fields - within the last two years.
