Junior Systems Administrator - Information Technology


Responsible for assisting with the day to day operations and monitoring of the IT infrastructure for the Dallas Zoo and Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park. Tasks include, but are not limited to reviewing system logs, reviewing system performance, validating nightly backups, new account creation, DHCP and DNS maintenance and configuration. This role will be the level two escalation point for issues that extend beyond individual computers and will assist the Systems Administrator with routine tasks involving both the physical and virtual technological assets. The Junior Systems Administrator works as part of a team to monitor and maintain a reliable hardware and software infrastructure.


  • Assist with IT asset management, including auditing, updating, and completing a yearly inventory of zoo assets.
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times.
  • Provide level two support and troubleshooting through the Help Desk.
  • Document troubleshooting efforts, and resolution for all level two escalated tickets.
  • Document procedures for resolved level two issues in knowledgebase for future reference.
  • Provisions new hire accounts, verifies permissions, email, and user attributes are correct.
  • Provides remote support when necessary.
  • Monitor physical and virtual server infrastructure through analyzing logs, performance indexes, and review of helpdesk tickets.
  • Provisions and installs desktops and virtual servers.
  • Assists with maintenance and monitoring of the Windows server environment with the Systems Administrator.
  • Assists with day to day maintenance and monitoring of network based services, such as Print and File shares, Exchange, Active Directory, DHCP/DNS/WSUS, with oversight by the Systems Administrator.
  • Assist with maintaining written documentation of server and application environments.
  • Performs software update testing for Windows and software updates.
  • Work with Systems Administrator in implementing new server technologies.
  • Work with Systems Administrator in implementing new computer policies.
  • Escalates tier 3 support issues to Systems Administrator for resolution.
  • Provides level 1 support and customer service through the Help Desk as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Systems Administrator and/or department leadership.


  • Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must have at least 4 years of technical experience or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Must have at least 2 years of Windows server support, showing progression of technical ability and responsibility.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office, Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2012 (experience with Windows Server 2016 a plus).
  • Must have the ability to configure and manage systems both on site and through remote administration tools including CLI and RDP.
  • Must have the ability to utilize the tools and services required to configure, maintain, and monitor a secure and highly utilized environment.
  • Must have working knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, TCP/IP, DNS, Firewall configuration and operations.
  • Must have knowledge of back up and disaster recovery configuration, maintenance, and execution.
  • Must have strong analytical skills for problem resolution.
  • Must have knowledge of IT concepts and best practices.
  • Must be proactive, a self-starter, and capable of working independently with little supervision as well as part of a team.
  • Must be polite and professional and able to establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, employees and zoo guests.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be level headed in difficult situations, reacting quickly and positively to bring problems to resolution.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel,stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders and carry up to 50lbs.
  • Knowledge of SCCM, SCOM, and remote software deployment practices a plus.
  • Progress towards MCSE certification with timeline to complete certification, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of SQL databases and query syntax a plus.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license to operate Zoo vehicles as well as reliable transportation.
