Events Intern (Unpaid)


Responsible for supporting the Events team and all logistical details associated with ~40 events annually. This includes the building of registration forms, interfacing with prospective and current event registrants, running reports on attendance and participant demographics, and assisting with communication between teams and departments regarding program registration data. Answer general inquiries from the public via phone and email. Assist with other administrative duties as needed.


  • Function as the primary resource for administrative needs.
  • Provide support and troubleshoot customer service issues for event guests.
  • Deliver excellent guest service to guests, staff, sponsors and volunteers.
  • Organize and respond to internal & external information requests in a timely manner.
  • Customer service liaison between event registrants and zoo staff, including confirmation and follow up emails, phone, or in-person interactions. Process event cancellations and refunds.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with key zoo departments, especially the Operations team, Communications, Learning, and Guest Services.
  • Maintain registration databases; maintain records to track event participation/records, and provide reports as requested.
  • Monitor the Calendar of Events portion of web site for accurate event information and request changes and corrections as appropriate.
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of meetings and events such as: ZooLights, Fall Fest, Adults Night Out, United Run for the Zoo, Yoga at the Zoo, beer and wine tasting events, Farm-to-Table-Dinner, and International conferences. Just to name a few!
  • Assist with event planning, onsite set-up, day-of liaison to all volunteers, vendors and staff, and event clean-up as requested.
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of yearlong planning calendars, event folders/binders, event reports, site map diagrams, requests, invoices, and other documents.
  • Help to brainstorm new grassroot strategies to help advertise and promote all Lincoln Park Zoo events and tap into new audiences.
  • Play a key role in helping to develop and implement a Brand Ambassador initiative for the Zoo.
  • Conduct a current industry and competitive landscape analysis of events occurring in the Chicagoland area to ensure that Lincoln Park Zoo is reaching all possible audiences and providing experiences that are ahead of / on par with upcoming trends, and bringing fresh events to the marketplace. Provide a recommendations report to Lincoln Park Zoo of noteworthy opportunities.
  • Help brainstorm new, creative events, increase revenue streams at existing events and enhance guest experiences while at events.
  • Project a positive image of the Events Department and Lincoln Park Zoo at all times.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.


  • Develop an activity at one Adults Night Out and see it through from concept to creation.
  • Study market trends and come up with one event with full scale budget and concept
  • Demonstrate appropriate logistical operations while advancing various events with vendors
  • Identify methods for promoting and suggesting marketing goals for events
  • Create a Street Team guide for assistance in spreading awareness on the ground for our events.


  • Experience with Microsoft Office and expertise with word processing, spreadsheet and database software required. Experience with Microsoft Office required. Experience with program reservation software (Eventbrite) a plus. Social Media and Marketing knowledge is helpful.
  • Ability to organize tasks and time to ensure timely completion of all projects.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, zoo visitors and general public, clients and sponsors.
  • Creative, forward thinker who is resourceful and can think outside the box.
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Extremely organized and able to develop innovative solutions under pressure.
  • A strong work ethic and positive attitude are essential.


Unpaid internship, college credit required.


  • Experience performing administrative support duties in a dynamic office environment.
  • Event experience, either personally or professionally, a plus.
  • Experience in not-for-profit sector, a plus.


  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to operate and safely drive electric carts
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and move boxes and parcels of up to 30 lbs
  • No allergies to plants or animals
  • Ability to traverse zoo grounds


  • Ability to work in open office with high possibility of interruption or distraction.
  • Available to occasionally work special events that may occur outside of regular work schedule, including evenings, weekends, or early mornings according to the demands of the event roster.
