Seasonal Interpreter

Personal passion about advancing animal conservation, both locally and globally, is a primary job responsibility of every employee at the Indianapolis Zoo.  It is the heart of who we are, and a core value of our employees.  Nationally accredited as a zoo, a botanical garden, and an aquarium, the Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader in animal conservation, a top tourist destination in the Midwest, and is located in Indy’s vibrant downtown. 


From May through September, our seasonal Interpreters facilitate various on-grounds experiences for the Zoo’s Education Department. This includes monitoring and interpreting at the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center, presenting public chats, feed demonstrations, dolphin shows, and acting as a roving interpreter between scheduled programs.


Seasonal Interpreters typically work up to 32 hours per week.  The hourly pay for this role is $10.00 per hour. The work schedule will vary, and will include holidays.  Daily shifts can vary with programming and attendance throughout the year.  Working on holidays and week-ends is required.


The successful candidate will possess:


  • Extraordinary aptitude for dealing with people and excellent public speaking skills
  • Formal or informal educational institution experience (teaching) preferred.    
  • Ability to quickly learn interpretive techniques. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas in an engaging verbal manner. 
  • Electronic media/technology, computer and word processing abilities
  • Prior experience working with the public, especially children preferred
  • Experience in public speaking or theater/performing arts is preferred. 
  • A personal commitment to conservation
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to assess situations, use good procedure/judgment and follow through. 



Requirements include:

  • High school diploma/G.E.D.  Post-secondary education preferred.
  • Ability to work required scheduled hours, including Saturdays and Sundays, and holidays.
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work outside in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions.
