Animal Care Assistant

Seasonal Position at the Topeka Zoo


As a temporary, non-benefit eligible employee this position performs duties that impact meaningful zoo guest experiences in the Adventure Trail and Native Butterfly area. This work has several components that are focused on the guest experience, maintaining some animal exhibits and presentation areas. Responsibilities involve the care of the Lorikeet aviary (daily husbandry, interaction with zoo guests; and guest feeding opportunities).  It involves the care and monitoring of the Farm Yard (daily husbandry, interaction with zoo guests, and monitoring the area). Provides meaningful presentations to zoo guests at the Zoo’s Wildlife Theater. Will need to be able to properly handle program animals during the presentations with messaging inline with the zoo’s mission and vision statements. Work will include monitoring, daily preparations of the native butterfly habitat (readiness to open, care for flora, care for native butterflies, butterfly chambering rearing areas, programs, keeping collection contained)

Staff works in a team setting preforming duties that range from educational presentations, animal husbandry, up-keep and the operation. They will be trained in some point of sale opportunities, work rentals and events. Staff will need to provide excellent customer service, presentations and animal care.   Hourly wage= $8.00 an hour; employed by Friends of the Topeka Zoo. Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the zoo, and vary. Working more than 24 hours a week but and not to exceed 40 hours a week.

Requirements: This position is for late April through September, applicants must be available for this time period. Applicants must have at least 3 months of Zoo experience. Applicants must pass a background check and take a tuberculosis test. Applicants will be required to work weekends and holidays as assigned. Individuals will need to be self-motivated, take initiative, and work with general supervision.
