Primate Curator

The Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader of animal conservation and is an AZA accredited institution.  We’re located on a 64 acre campus in the heart of vibrant downtown Indianapolis, and a top tourist destination in the Midwest.  In addition to our animal exhibits, gardens, and aquarium, we support local and international animal conservation efforts.  The Zoo is a private, 501(c)(3) organization.  All of our employees and volunteers are committed to supporting the Zoo's mission of empowering people and communities, both locally and globally, to advance animal conservation.                                           

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.  A graduate degree in a related field is preferred.

The Primate Curator will manage and oversee all of our primate areas and staff.  The Curator has oversight of all areas they manage, and will be directly responsible and accountable for all departmental functions to include, but not limited to. 

  • Responsible for the overall management of our Primate collection, and develops animal management protocols. 
  • Assists with recruiting, training, supervising, and managing the performance of area managers and staff
  • Develops and oversees the animal husbandry enrichment, and training programs for the collection.
  • Ensures compliance of all Zoo, USDA, and AZA policies, protocols, and standard operating procedures.
  • Speaks to the media and general public
  • Participates in collection and facilities planning, improvements to existing facilities, and the development of new exhibits.
  • Actively participates in education programming, conferences, scientific research and conservation activities.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with counterparts in other zoological institutions and conservation organizations regarding acquisitions and dispositions, breeding, and SSP activities.
  • Assists the General Curator in developing area’s annual budget, and operates within budget parameters.

Experience and Skills required:

A minimum of ten (10) years of direct or related experience in a zoo or similar professional setting.

At least four (4) years of demonstrated management experience.

Temperamentally suited to working with animals

Good supervisory, interpersonal, and observational skills. 

Proven decision making and problem solving skills.

Outstanding public speaking skills. 

Physical requirements of this position, including but not limited to:

  • Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions. 
  • Ability to perform very heavy work, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. 
  • Ability to climb and maintain body equilibrium while performing various jobs. 
  • Excellent visual acuity and hearing required.
  • Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens.  Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.)  Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines. 

    Successfully completing pre-employment requirements of a drug test, driving record check, and a limited criminal history check is a condition of employment.
