National Aviary

Indoor Avian Zoo

Horticulturist, Full-Time

The National Aviary is seeking a full-time professional Horticulturist. The successful candidate’s scheduled hours will usually be Monday through Friday during the day, with occasional evenings and weekends required.  This position reports to the Director of Animal Collections/Programs, and is classified as non-exempt.

The position’s responsibilities include, though are not limited to:  developing design plans for horticultural and landscaping projects to include placement of plants, trees, and flowers; ensuring that the exhibits and grounds are constructed, prepared, planted, watered, and maintained to be conducive to the healthy conditions of the plants for an overall appearance that is aesthetically pleasing; performing daily cycle of care for the plant collections, including pest control; managing a properly functioning greenhouse; arranging the removal of litter from work areas; submitting requests for landscaping and pesticide supplies; monitoring expenditures and staying within budget for assigned programs; manifesting a cooperative attitude in coordinating work with members of other teams, such as the Animal Collection and Education teams; professional responsiveness to questions, issues, and complaints regarding horticultural issues from managers, staff, vendors, visitors, and outside organizations; ability and patience to supervise and train horticulture interns and volunteers in fieldwork and exhibit maintenance; excellent verbal and written communication skills; willingness to effectively answer questions and impart knowledge in a clear and pleasant manner; must possess a valid PA driver’s license/good driving record; ability to safely operate and maintain hand and power equipment.

A requirement of the position is to have a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or a related field.  The successful candidate will have two to four years of experience planning and performing landscaping and horticultural project work with indoor tropical plants, and possession of or willingness to obtain a PA pesticide application certification.

Applicant must be able to perform heavy physical labor including lifting and carrying up to 50#, pushing, pulling, reaching, grabbing, crawling, crouching, bending, kneeling, and climbing.  Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Applicant must be at least 18 years old.  In order to work at the National Aviary, one must be able to pass the required PA Child Abuse, Criminal Background, and FBI fingerprinting investigations.
