Stingray Bay Unpaid Internship

Overview:

The Stingray Bay Internship will provide valuable experience working hands-on with life support maintenance and animal husbandry.  The stingray bay intern position will assist with daily care of the stingray bay exhibit and animals. 

Responsibilities can include:

  • Assist with filter maintenance – backwashing sand filters, cleaning RK2 protein skimmer, cleaning pump baskets, cleaning pressure gauge lids, adding H2O to the exhibit
  • Assist with WQ monitoring – using YSI 9300 photometer to monitor water quality and ensure it remains within set parameters
  • Assist with exhibit maintenance – raking substrate, scrubbing algae, cleaning skimmer leaf baskets
  • Animal health care – assist with routine exams, obtaining weights, restraining rays for barb trims as needed, animal observations
  • Assist with animal behavioral training

*Responsibilities will vary depending on work schedule. 

Duration/Time Commitment:

All college internships are unpaid.  Stingray Bay Internships are full-semester commitments with a minimum of at least 10 hours per week.  The total number of hours worked per week may vary based on the credit requirements with your school.

Experience Required

Qualifications: • Must be enrolled in or recently graduated from college • Internships available for undergraduate and graduate students • Must have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate schooling • Must be able to pass a TB test • Ability to work in all weather conditions • Willingness to get wet & dirty • Ability to lift 50 lbs. • Ability to work as a team or individually • Good public speaking skills • Excellent record keeping skills • *If receiving school credit, it’s the responsibility of the students to arrange for the credit.

Further Comments

If selected for an internship candidates must adhere to reference checks, level 2 background fingerprints, proof of a negative TB test within the past year (at intern’s expense), drug screen and pay the $50 intern fee (this fee covers your fingerprints and drug screen). A current tetanus vaccine is recommended.
