2017 Summer Junior ZooCamp Counselor

Roger William's Park Zoo is currently recruiting Junior ZooCamp Counselors for the 2017 summer season. Junior ZooCamp Counselors are responsible for supporting and assisting ZooCamp Counselors in supervising, guiding and teaching children ages 4-10 as they learn about animals and experience the Zoo. Junior ZooCamp Counselors will also work alongside and mentor teen volunteers ages 12-17.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist ZooCamp Counselors in enthusiastically engaging assigned group of campers in a schedule of educational crafts, activities, snacks, animal encounters and zoo tours.
  • Assist ZooCamp Counselors in ensuring the safety of all ZooCampers while participating in ZooCamp.
  • Build and maintain a good rapport with campers.
  • Lead assigned group of campers in one activity period per day.
  • Work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Direct the daily clean-up and organization of ZooCamp.
  • Mentor Counselors-in-Training (CITs).
  • Actively participate in daily ZooCamp team meetings and trainings.
  • Demonstrate & encourage respect of Zoo exhibit animals & animal ambassadors during Zoo tours & animal encounters.
  • Assist with administrative duties, including but not limited to processing and preparing camper materials such as T-Shirts and name badges for following weeks.
  • Support both the mission of the Zoo and the related mission of the education department by performing other duties as assigned by the ZooCamp Counselors, Assistant ZooCamp Director, ZooCamp Director, Manager of Family Programs, and/or the Director of Education.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • At least 16 years of age (necessitated by supervision of campers ages 4 - 10)
  • Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings & weekends.
  • Successful completion of a background check (if over 18 years of age).
  • Mandatory Training Dates in May & June TBA. 
  • Work Schedule:  June 19th -- August 25th, Mon – Thurs 8 AM -- 4:30 PM, Fri – 8 AM – 5 PM
     

Experience Required

A minimum of one year of experience working with children ages 4 – 10 is required. Familiarity with informal education and a Summer Camp environment strongly desired. Skills and Aptitudes: • Interest in and general knowledge of natural history and conservation topics. • Ability to make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed. • High level of patience. • Team-orientation. • Extremely strong communication, organizational and time management skills. • Classroom and management skills.
