Summer ZooCamp Conservation Heroes Counselor

Roger William's Park Zoo is currently recruiting a ZooCamp Conservation Heroes Counselor for the 2017 summer season. The ZooCamp Conservation Heroes Counselor is responsible for assisting the Lead Conservation Heroes ZooCamp Counselor as they empower campers age 11-13 to become leaders in conservation through teambuilding and leadership activities, engagement in inquiry activities, games, encounters with wild animal ambassadors, visits to animal exhibits and outdoor exploration.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enthusiastically engage campers in a curriculum including inquiry-based activities, teambuilding, animal encounters and zoo tours.
  • Ensure the safety of all ZooCampers while participating in ZooCamp -- may require enforcing policies, response to emergency situations and administering first aid.
  • In the event of the Lead Conservation Heroes Counselor’s absence, be able to oversee the running of the Conservation Heroes camp day and provide supervision & support to a substitute co-counselor through direction and active feedback.
  • Set and maintain behavioral expectations for campers.
  • Utilize a variety of behavioral support tools, when applicable, to ensure a fun, safe and inclusive environment for campers of all abilities.
  • Build and maintain a good rapport with campers and parents.
  • Assist with photo documenting camp days as needed, for use in generating a daily ZooCamp newsletter.
  • Actively participate in daily ZooCamp team meetings & trainings.
  • Work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Communicate effectively with the ZooCamp Team, including the Lead Conservation Heroes Counselor and the ZooCamp Director, Assistant ZooCamp Director & Inclusion Specialist (“Team Eagle”).
  • Assist with clean-up and organization of ZooCamp.
  • Chaperone and participate in CIT teambuilding.
  • Demonstrate & encourage respect of Zoo exhibit animals & animal ambassadors during Zoo tours & animal encounters.
  • Assist with initial and continual camp curriculum development.
  • Support both the mission of the Zoo and the related mission of the education department by performing other duties as assigned by the Assistant ZooCamp Director, ZooCamp Director, Manager of Family Programs, and/or the Director of Education.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old (necessitated by supervision of CITs age 12-17)
  • Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Mandatory Training Dates in May & June TBA.  Please check back for details.
  • Work Schedule:  June 19th – August 18th (except July 24th-28th) Monday – Thursday 8am – 4:30pm Friday 8am – 5pm


 

Experience Required

Completion or pursuit of a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, or related field from an accredited college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of one year of leadership experience working with children ages 11 -- 13. Familiarity with mentoring teens, informal education and summer camp environment strongly desired. Skills and Aptitudes: • General knowledge of natural history and conservation topics. • Ability to make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed. • High level of patience. • Team-orientation. • Classroom and behavior management skills. • Extremely strong communication, organizational and time management skills.
