The AZA-accredited Great Plains Zoo is a progressive, mid-sized Zoo with a collection of more than 1,000 animals representing 160 species. As one of the top attractions in South Dakota, the Zoo welcomes more than 300,000 visitors each year and educates 40,000 children through a multi-pronged education program. The Zoo also has a state-of-the-art Education Center, which is equipped with distance learning technology, hosts a free weekly reading program, and is next a play-and-learn Kids’ Clinic.
The Great Plains Zoo is currently seeking an energetic and self-motivated individual to join the Education Department as a fulltime Education Specialist. The Education Specialist will design and conduct education programming, including participating in and conducting on-grounds presentations, classroom teaching, Zoo Mobiles, special marketing events, and other wildlife demonstrations. The Education Specialist will be expected to interact and interpret with visitors in a positive manner in a variety of situations. In addition to education related duties, this position encompasses skilled professional and technical work in the routine daily care and husbandry of assigned animals, enclosures and related facilities of the Zoo’s Ambassador Animal Collection. The Ambassador Animal Collection includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The current Ambassador Animal Collection consists of about 50 animals (30 species). This position will also have duties related to the Zoo’s museum and biofact collections.
Requires a college degree in biological sciences, education or related field. Experience presenting informal or formal education programs and experience caring for animals is required. Applicable experience may be considered in place of degree requirement. Must be comfortable with children of all ages, adults, and animals while speaking to groups of various sizes and ages. Manual dexterity is necessary to carefully handle a variety of education animals and museum artifacts. Requires knowledge of Windows based software and the ability to produce written materials for various publications and marketing tools.
